Hasenhuttl tried to borrow Williams, 20, from United in January, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer refused to let him go.

Southampton are hoping Solskjaer will reconsider his position for next season, with Williams starting just three games this term.

Rico Henry of Brentford is another name the Saints might consider this summer, particularly if the Bees fail to win a promotion and Ryan Bertrand leaves for free

Meanwhile are keen to sign Theo Walcott for good in the summer after being impressed with his performance and attitude this season.

The Saints generally seek out younger reinforcements, but will make an exception for Lender Walcott.

The 47-cap England star, now 32, has impressed since arriving from Goodison Park in January and prepared Nathan Redmond’s winner against Burnley on Sunday.

Walcott will be a free agent when his contract with Everton expires in June, but he is confident his future will be determined soon.

He said: “To be completely honest I just couldn’t wait to get in shape. As easy as that.

“This thing will work out on its own, I’m sure.” I’m just taking care of myself and working hard playing for Southampton right now.

“We will see what the future holds.”
