Fort Dodge’s Crossroads Mall will permanently close next Tuesday

The start of a multimillion-dollar project is on the horizon in Fort Dodge, and it comes with the closure of the city’s longtime mall. Crossroads Mall will officially close on September 6 at 6 p.m. Shoe Sensation is the only store in the mall. The other shops that once stood in the mall are now gone, closing years ago or recently as the big project approached. “The mall was in decline and losing tenants,” said Vicke Reeck, the city’s director of community and economic development. “There had been some divestment in the mall area.” Reeck said the retail industry has changed over the past few years. More and more people are turning away from shopping in person and prefer to shop online. Going forward, what is known as Crossroads Mall will become Corridor Plaza. “This space will be kind of a mixed-use space,” Reeck said. “There is a public part of the project, and then there will also be a hotel, retail and restaurants. There is a UnityPoint clinic across the street, so it will be a mixed-use space. direction in which malls are going these days.” The project is estimated at $90 million. “The city is investing about $18 million in tax increase funding, and that was used to buy the property and tear down the site,” Reeck said. “And then the city received $17 million from the District Reinvestment Program through the State of Iowa.
