Instacart and Chase have just launched the very first card co-branded by a food delivery service: the Instacart Mastercard® credit card. If you frequently use Instacart for grocery delivery, this card could be a good way to maximize your cash back, and you’ll even earn bonus cash back on other categories like restaurants and gas stations.
In addition to earning bonus money on Instacart and other expenses with no annual fee, the Instacart Mastercard has a limited time offer for new cardholders: the first 10,000 cardholders approved by 04/08 /22 will receive a $200 Instacart gift card, plus a free year of Instacart+ membership (those approved after the first 10,000 receive $100 and a free year of Instacart+). Joining Instacart+ gives you free shipping and reduced service fees.
Here we focus on the rewards and benefits that come with each card. These cards aren’t worth it if you’re paying interest or late fees. When using a credit card, it’s important to pay off your balance in full each month, make your payments on time, and only spend what you can afford.
Instacart Mastercard Rewards and Benefits
The Instacart Mastercard® credit card is a cashback card and its rewards earnings break down as follows:
- 5% cash back on Instacart purchases made at over 800 national, regional and local brands at over 70,000 stores in over 5,500 cities (including Aldi, Giant, CVS and Wegmans)
- 5% cash back on trips purchased through the Chase Travel Center
- 2% cash back at gas stations and restaurants, and on select streaming services
- 1% cash back on all other purchases
You can redeem Instacart Mastercard® cash back as a direct deposit or statement credit to your account, or you can redeem your cash back rewards for travel through the Chase Travel Center. Starting in the fall, you’ll also have the option to use Cash Back to pay for all or part of your delivery orders through Instacart.com or the Instacart app, with no minimum redemption amount.

For a limited time, the first 10,000 cardholders approved by 8/4/22 will receive a $200 Instacart gift card, plus a free year of Instacart+ membership (those approved after the first 10,000 receive $100 and a free year of Instacart+)
Is the Instacart Mastercard for you?
If you’re already an Instacart shopper, the Instacart Mastercard® credit card might be the perfect fit for you. Unlimited 5% cash back on Instacart purchases could help you save on groceries, not to mention pharmacy, alcohol, and other purchases you can make through Instacart. Best of all, you’ll also earn 2% cash back at restaurants, gas stations, and on select streaming services, especially with no annual fee.
The welcome bonus is a great way to save on Instacart purchases, especially if you’re one of the first 10,000 to get approved and get the $200 statement credit. And starting this fall, you’ll be able to redeem cash back on your Instacart purchases, another money-saving perk for those who already use Instacart regularly.
If you don’t use Instacart or only use it occasionally, Instacart Mastercard® may not be the best choice for you. If you prefer to shop in-store, you might consider the Blue Cash Preferred® card from American Express, which earns you 6% cash back at US supermarkets (up to $6,000 spent annually, then 1% cashback) and select streaming services, 3% back at US gas stations, 3% on public transit, and 1% on all other purchases (cash back is received in the form of reward dollars). There is a cap on the amount of bonuses you will earn at US supermarkets, but you are not limited to Instacart purchases to earn bonus rewards in this category. However, note that this card has an annual fee of $95.
For those who want to earn bonus money on purchases, including groceries without paying an annual fee, there’s also the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards credit card, which earns 3% on purchases of dining, entertainment and groceries, and 1% on everything else.
At the end of the line
If you’re a frequent Instacart shopper, the new Instacart Mastercard® might make a lot of sense, as it gives you a very solid 5% cash back on your Instacart purchases, with no caps on your rewards. Bonus cash back at restaurants, gas stations and on select streaming services and trips booked through the Chase Travel Center are also a nice perk.
Don’t wait long to apply if you’re interested in this card, as only the first 10,000 approved applicants will receive the $200 Instacart credit. But even if you miss that threshold, you’ll get $100 in Instacart credit when you’re approved, plus the free year of Instacart+.
